The old institution was fourth in the world - two places on the traditional rivals - tables, the universities against a number of benchmarks including research, to measure teaching and reputation.

Sally Hunt, Secretary General of the University, and Union College, said: "higher education is a field where we can rightly and proudly say that we are still the world."


"Unfortunately, if we want to reconsider plans to finance urgently slash not we get left behind."

Harvard was the first time in eight years after California Institute of technology is obsolete from knocked the top spot. Stanford was joint second - next to Harvard - and Oxford finished fourth.


Cambridge, was sixth and Imperial College London - as the eighth best-the two other British institutions in the top were 10.

Researchers said the improved performance of Oxford can ensure up to minor changes in the methodology, institutions with a focus on art and humanities were more on an equal footing with which science specialized. David Willetts, the universities Minister said the data "brings very strongly, that universities a public good".


"Put our reforms of higher education funding on a sustainable basis", he added. "We estimate that the money to universities could be 10% higher until 2014-15, as is the case now."
